FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Bellingham, WA) Recent rumors that have been discussed about my opponent demand that I speak to the community directly on this issue.

While such things may be standard practice elsewhere, rumors have no place in my campaign. I have worked too long in this community to allow gossip unrelated to the issues facing Bellingham to define our community dialogue or to be associated with my campaign.

I commiserate with Dan Pike. As candidates, both of us—and our families—have been subjected to mean-spirited talk. While this may be part of political reality, it is deplorable and it harms our community. I want this important election to be based on the issues and the candidates.

Our first meeting to explore whether or not to pursue this race was December 9, 2006 and at that time, I framed my philosophy for my campaign. I spoke clearly to my campaign team then and have repeated my position over the ensuing months to my team and to individual supporters: Our campaign is issue-based. We will not veer from my belief that our community needs to judge the candidates on important elements—character, record, leadership and hands-on community experience.

An email sent by a supporter of mine to his close friend was inconsistent with the clear, specific instructions I had given my campaign and that was wrong. That it then became public and was openly discussed in the media was very unfair to the Pike family. I ask all of my supporters to hold firm to important discussions about issues.

This is a crucial time in our community and we must focus on the real issues at hand. I want voters to have all the information they need to make a good decision with their ballots. Let's not get distracted from what is important—the future of Bellingham.
